We Rebuilt Our Site on Astro — and It Was Like Flipping a Switch

We talk a lot about “engineered luck.” Last week we pointed that engineering at our own front door — and the results were hard to argue with.

We rebuilt youfeelinglucky.com on Astro, a modern, static‑first web framework, and our Google performance scores didn’t creep up. They jumped.

The before and after

Our old build was dragging along with a performance score stuck in the 60s — the kind of number that quietly costs you rankings and customers. After the Astro rebuild, here’s what Google’s own tools report:

MetricBeforeAfter (desktop)
Performance~60s98
SEO100
Largest Contentful Paintslow0.5s
First Contentful Paintslow0.5s
Cumulative Layout Shift0 (perfect)
Total Blocking Time0 ms

On mobile — the harder test, and where most local searches actually happen — we’re in the mid‑80s and climbing, with a perfect 100 SEO and zero layout shift. No jumpy buttons, no content sliding around while it loads.

And then there’s this: Google’s Rich Results Test now recognizes 5 valid structured‑data types on our site — Organization, Local Business, review star‑ratings, and a carousel. On the old build? Google detected zero. That’s the difference between showing up as a plain blue link and showing up with ⭐ ratings and rich detail that earns the click.

It genuinely felt like flipping a switch.

Why this isn’t just a vanity score

Here’s the part that matters for your business: Google uses page speed as a ranking signal. Its Core Web Vitals — how fast your page paints, how stable it is, how quickly it responds — feed directly into where you land in search results. A slow site doesn’t just annoy visitors; it gets buried.

And it’s not only about rankings. Study after study shows the same thing: every extra second of load time bleeds conversions. For a local business, that’s a plumber, a realtor, a contractor clicking away before your page even finishes loading — and calling the competitor whose site was ready.

Fast site → better rankings → more visitors → more of them actually stick and convert. Speed is one of the highest‑leverage, least‑glamorous moves in local SEO, and most Orange County businesses never touch it.

What Astro changed under the hood

Without the jargon: we shifted to a static‑first architecture. Instead of shipping a pile of JavaScript for the browser to assemble on the fly, the pages arrive already built — lean HTML that renders almost instantly. Less code to download, nothing blocking the paint, nothing shifting around. That’s how you get a 0.5‑second paint and a rock‑solid, zero‑shift layout.

Same content. Same brand. A fraction of the weight.

We don’t just recommend this — we run it

This is exactly the work we do for the businesses we partner with. We didn’t rebuild our own site for a screenshot; we did it because the fundamentals we preach — speed, clean structure, real SEO — are the fundamentals that move the needle. If it’s good enough to stake our own front page on, it’s good enough for yours.
